The Krautsand Farm
Welcome to Krautsand Farm, your local organic farm near Hamburg, picturesquely situated directly on the Elbe River on the beautiful island of Krautsand. Here, everything revolves around regional food and sustainability. We raise cattle and chickens and offer high-quality, regional premium meat, as well as many other products made in-house, which we sell in our two butcher shops in Hittfeld and Hamburg-Eppendorf. At Krautsand Farm, we talk about "rethinking agriculture" because we're taking a path that differs significantly from conventional, industrial production. Our aim is to practice agriculture in a way that is both sensible and respectful, in harmony with animals, nature, and people.

With the arrival of our first sheep , we have added another animal species to the Krautsand Farm's pastures. They enjoy spacious areas, fresh grass, and species-appropriate housing. Natural breeding and species-appropriate husbandry on the Krautsand Farm
Our pasture-based farming is the heart of our sustainable farming at Krautsand Farm. On spacious, natural, and pristine land, our cattle can graze freely, exercise extensively, and live out their natural social behavior within the herd . For this reason, we fully support our special rearing concept , in which our calves remain with their mothers until sexual maturity.
The diverse pastures provide an optimal forage base year-round – in summer, the animals enjoy the variety of lush grasses, herbs, and wildflowers, while in winter, our own silage ensures a balanced diet. This natural environment not only promotes the well-being and health of the animals , but is also reflected in the outstanding quality of the meat .

Our farm is located in a nature reserve where traditional grazing creates valuable habitats – in contrast to intensive mowing pastures that destroy breeding grounds.

Lapwings and curlews find safe breeding grounds on our pastures and benefit from the insects attracted by our cattle.
- Winter quarters for migratory birds
In winter, tens of thousands of geese rest on our land, and even the sea eagle hunts for prey here.

Canals and ditches, so-called tidal creeks, provide habitat for rare insects and amphibians.
